INMS Community of Practice

INMS Meeting Edinburgh

Whereas the specific activities listed in this tab describe the specific work areas of INMS from its inception up to 2026, it is important to recognize that the overall effort has built a major new Community of Practice for delivering scientific support to international nitrogen policymaking.
The INMS Community of Practice builds cooperation that looks to promote scientific knowledge on human alternation of the nitrogen cycle, to explore and assess solutions and to bring this knowledge in a form useful for policy development.
The INMS Community of Practice builds on partnerships originally made through the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI) and the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM) and at the same time feeds into other initiatives, such as the UNECE Task Force on Reactive Nitrogen, the GEF Clean and Healthy Oceans (CHO) Programme and the US National Science Foundation international nitrogen network (iN-Net).
Recognizing these multiple dimensions, the unique distinctiveness of the INMS Community of Practice is its cooperation as a science-lead community to inform the development of international nitrogen policies.  The outcomes of the community see expression in core products such as:
  • The first International Nitrogen Assessment, to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2027.
  • The INMS Guidance Documents and Special Reports, designed to be useful for member states of the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen and other stakeholders.
  • Contributions to the development National Nitrogen Action plans, prepared by UN Member States.
  • In person and online contributions by the INMS science team to activities of the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM) and the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen.
  • Evidence led contributions to awareness raising events relevant for nitrogen policy and action, such as linked to UN Marine, Climate, Biodiversity, Air Pollution and Ozone Conventions and programmes.
  • Provision of technical support to Member states leading resolutions on sustainable nitrogen management at the United Nations Environment Assembly.
