Environment Protection Act 1994 (Cap. 71).

The object of the Act is to provide for the protection, improvement and preservation of the environment and for the prevention, control and abatement of environmental pollution (sect. 3).; The Act consists of 40 sections and is divided into 7 Parts: Preliminary (I); Administration (II); Prevention Control and Abatement of Environmental Pollution (III); Environmental Impact Assessment (IV); Enforcement (V); Offences, Penalties and Procedures (VI); Miscellaneous Provisions (VII).; The Minister responsible for the environment may, by Order published in the Official Gazette, constitute one or more corporate bodies to which shall be assigned authority and responsibility to implement measures provided for under this Act or shall have powers and functions as may be specified in the Order (sect. 4). Section 5 provides for the establishment of a National Environmental Advisory Council. The Minister may prescribe standards for emissions and residues specified in article 6. Water quality management shall be subject to further regulation by the Minister (sect. 6). Coastal zones may be declared by the Minister and the Authority shall prepare and keep under review an Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (sect. 11). The Minister may appoint Environmental Appraisal Committees under section 15 which shall advise the Minister on environmental impact assessment. Section 15 specifies also the contents of Environment Impact Studies to be prepared by project promoters.
