GCRF South Asian Nitrogen Hub: Workshop on Regional Nitrogen Modelling, 11-13 September, 2019, Chennai, India

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is supporting a major new research hub on nitrogen and sustainable development. The hub focuses on South Asia as a key global region for nitrogen pollution, set within the broader context of the International Nitrogen Management System (INMS) currently being developed with UN Environment. The GCRF South Asian Nitrogen Hub is built around four major Research Programmes:  RP1: Building the nitrogen policy arena for South Asia; RP2:  Nitrogen solutions to maximize resilience, co-benefits & reduce trade-offs;  RP3: Improving understanding and awareness of key nitrogen threats;  and RP4: Integrating regional nitrogen flows and impacts in South Asia.

In order to implement RP4 it is necessary to share knowledge between researchers and build capacity in regional nitrogen modelling. These aims will be addressed in a three-day workshop (11-13 September, Chennai) where experts in atmospheric, hydrological, marine, and health modelling will provide introductory and in-depth explanations of how models work and how they are used to model the flows of various forms of reactive nitrogen in air, rivers, the coast, and the ocean. This will then feed in to developing the detailed work programme of RP4, considering data sharing needs across South Asia, the needs for supporting experimental and monitoring data, and the building of sustained modelling partnerships. The models covered will include:

  • EMEP4Earth atmospheric chemistry transport model

  • UKCA United Kingdom Chemistry and Aerosols atmospheric chemistry-climate model

  • LTLS hydrological model of terrestrial and freshwater nutrient fluxes

  • MIKE21/3 Integrated Model for nearshore dynamics and associated ecosystems

  • NEMO-ERSEM ecosystem model of marine biogeochemistry

  • Life table modelling for health impacts of air pollution

This workshop would suit early-career scientists (PhD students and post-docs) keen to learn about modelling tools. All relevant partners of the GCRF South Asian Nitrogen Hub Project are welcome to express an interest in attending however, this meeting is mainly intended for colleagues who expect to be engaged with Work Packages 1.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 & 4.4.

The first two days of the meeting will be targeted toward those planning to learn about and use models. Day 1 will provide an overview of models being used in the Nitrogen Hub, then in the afternoon will focus particularly on specific models. Day 2 will continue looking at models in detail, and will provide opportunities to discuss modelling challenges and opportunities in South Asia. Day 3 will focus specifically on the modelling programme for the Nitrogen Hub with a focus on developing and scheduling of tasks. Day 3 is expected to be more in-depth and targeted for those with some modelling experience.

Registration is now open for the GCRF South Asian Nitrogen Hub: Workshop on Regional Nitrogen Modelling from 11-13 September, 2019 in Chennai, India.

The venue for the meeting is The Residency Towers Chennai.
